It depends on the specific trinomial, but generally the first step is to find all the factors of the unit coefficient. Then you check which of those factors sum to match the middle coefficient.

Assuming you have something like:
x² + 4x + 32

STEP 1 - Factors of 32:
1 x 32
2 x 16
4 x 8

STEP 2 - Sums of those factors:
1 + 32 = 33
2 + 16 = 18
4 + 8 = 12

The best I can guess from the answers is that C. is the correct answer, but I can't be 100% sure.

To ask us this question without showing us the trinomial is silly.

For the teacher to ask this question is also silly, as "the second step" depends on what strategy you select ... and you should NOT be restricted to whatever sequence of so-called right steps the teacher prescribed.
