when the factors of a trinomial are (x+p) and (x+q) then the coefficient of the x-term is the trinomial is:


(x + p)(x + q)
Use FOIL (First, outer inner last) => (a + b)(c + d) = ac + ad + bc + bd...

= (x)(x) + (x)(q) + (p)(x) + (p)(q)
= x^2 + qx + px + pq
= x^2 + (q + p)x + pq << combine like terms..

The coefficient is simply the number in front of the variable...so the coefficient of x is (p + q)..

Just multiply the factors using FOIL:

(x + p)(x + q) = x^2 + qx + px + pq

= x^2 + (p + q)x + pq

So the coefficient of x is p + q
