How do people start protests?

Just like these Blank Lives Matter protests, how do such an army of people that probably don't even know each other, amass in a large group to protest? Who starts protests?

The protest in Dallas was organized, because they had gotten a permit from the city to hold the protest. The area of the protest was mapped out, and there were 800 protesters and 100 police officers assigned to protect them as they marched and chanted. A formal protest has to be approved beforehand and it has to be held within a certain area. That's how the shooter knew where to pick his spot on the second floor of a parking garage to shoot the officers. He knew beforehand where they would be.
