First, the differences:
Xbox One S:
Release date: August 2016
Description: Standard Xbox One, just crammed into a smaller chassis at a lower price. Will come with a 500GB, 1TB or 2TB hard drive. Will support 4k video for streaming (e.g. Netflix) or new UHD movie discs.
Scropio (code name):
Release date: Q4 2017
Description: Not much is known about Scorpio other than "It will be the most powerful game console in the world." Other than that, Microsoft refused to discuss it. Supposedly, it's a Xbox One with some better hardware, mainly to allow video games to use 4k, and to support a VR headset (the Oculus Rift?) Why they even mentioned Scorpio at E3 right after they hyped the Xbox One S is beyond me. Basically, most people are just going to wait on getting a Xbox One, at least until they have more information about Scorpio.
So what should you do?
IF gaming in 4k and/or VR is important to you then clearly you should wait until Scorpio comes out. Yes, that's nearly a year and a half from now.
IF you don't care about 4k and/or VR, then at least wait for the Xbox One S to come out next month for no other reason than to get the 2TB model.
Since I already have a PS4, I can certainly afford to wait until Scorpio arrives before making a decision on which model to buy. Pity, too, since I was all set to buy a Xbox One S this Christmas.
