How do detectives act during an investigation?

Sometimes, especially on TV detectives can be seen laughing and joking around a crime scene. How would a detective act during an investigation. Would they always be focused on the job or would they have a laugh throughout?

Serious detectives do a fantastic job, as seen on TV's Homicide Hunter starring Lieutenant Joe Kenda. Others may not take the job quite as seriously as they should.

They'll laugh, sometimes inappropriately. Black humor relieves stress in situations like that.
