If you're looking to get into gardening ... you start by reading articles about the type(s) of garden you want.

After that ... you just go out and do it ... then keep at it as you grow to be a better and better gardener.

Clear the ground. Get rid of the sod covering the area you plan to plant. If you want quick results, you can dig it out, but it's easier to smother it with newspaper. A layer of five sheets is usually thick enough; double that if your lawn is Bermudagrass or St. Augustine grass. Spread a 3-inch layer of compost (or combination of potting soil and topsoil) on the newspaper and wait. It'll take about four months for the compost and paper to decompose.

Study the book of gardening and plan how to prepare things such as seed.

Take a look at your soil and do some research to find out what it needs to be productive. You can find a place online to test your soil. If you simply want to add better dirt to it if it needs it, just do so without all the expense. Start with something you like that would be easy to grow, like peppers. You can also do rows of lettuce, radishes, whatever grows in your area. I am upset because here I can't find started plants that come in the six packs and the ones that are one to a pot well, the prices are crazy. It's late to start a garden unless you are far north. But check around and go to real nurseries and ask there what they think. You also need to lightly fertilize your plants. Get to know your local gardener and they can be a big help with any problems. You need to turn over the dirt in your garden area and get rid of all growth. Take your shovel and break the dirt into very small pieces...either dig your holes and plant you plants and always deep water. I fill up the hole with water and let it sink in and then add more and put in the plant and needed dirt. Water frequently when small and until started, then water as needed. Fertilize as the internet tells you. I sometimes add just a pinch of fertilizer and water my garden with that. Instead of a big jolt they get fertilized a bit regularly. Look up the plants you picked and read on the internet just what they need and you will have a great garden. I grow for me but I also grow for my parrots. They need a lot of veggies on a daily basis and that gets expensive. If I can keep them happy without spraying poison on anything I figure I save myself a lot of money. Use the internet for all your plants. I just bought a fig tree and thought it was a small tree...not so. Should have checked first. I'm trying to plant things that have crops. I currently have a red grapefruit tree, 2 lime trees, a peach tree, a pecan tree..still waiting for pecans...and a apricot tree still waiting on that one too, and now the fig tree. Oh yea and banana trees and papaya trees. If I could keep my neighbors from stealing all the fruit, that would be good. Plant things further back that might tempt people. When I lived in St. LOuis I had a huge apricot tree that had produce every couple of years or so depending on the freezes. One day a guy came by in a truck...my neighbor saw him...and the guy just broke off branches instead of picking the fruit. I moved shortly after that but people will steal produce if you have a lot and they will come back every year to steal. They got sixty peaches this year and picked them before they were even near ripe. I didn't get even one. But I enjoy gardening but getting old to turn over the dirt. Finding help isn't easy either and I finally figured it costs more to grow my own. I did by a Black and Decker cultivator...it's a little thing with a batter...It is great for weeding. It isn't sturdy but used carefully, it saves me a lot of work. And last of all I mulch with my grass clippings but give plants room to breathe and eventually it all got turned over into the dirt. Have fun!

If you were a beginner and should consult with a gardener first prior to actual gardening otherwise studying
the book of gardening. Then, first of all, planning how to prepare things such as seed, soil, compost, fertilizer, garden tools and automatic sprinklers, etc.; after that, cultivating the land and clearing the weeds etc. prior to
adding black soil, compost, basic fertilizer, etc.; finally, sowing seeds into the soil and watering afterwards.

Go get some seeds, the library may have a seed section where you can get seeds, or buy some from the store, I would also buy some plants so you can just transplant them in. If your soil is hard, sandy, or barren, buy some seed cover or topsoil or manure, or all of the above and rake a layer over your dirt and plant into that, you don't really need to till or mix it in, the roots and biology will take care of that, get a sprinkler or hose end sprayer, or even a soaker hose or drip line and an irrigation timer, and water immediately after planting, then depending on your climate as needed (I live in the desert and need to water every other day)... Most importantly get a comfortable chair, relax and enjoy it, it's really easy and fun. Do some searches, get a book from the library, and if some plants die, that's okay it happens to all gardeners, research the individual plants and try again.

I highly recommend Mel Bartholomew's book, "Square Foot Gardening", available at Lowe's the last time I checked, as well as amazon, etc.

go and play with the soil in your backyard fist.

First step? Test the dirt. Take it to a gardening center. Have them test it. See how good it is and what it needs. Probably will need mulch or peat moss. Mix it in. Till the soil if you can-rent the machine if need be-future years it will be easier.

Plant seeds and water, thats it,our garden is doing great.Thats all i ever do Plant, water.Of i do use cow manure for fetilizer,I turn it into the soil before i plant, we have had a garden 1/4 acre for ten years,Corn has been doing great, been eating it for few weeks, we plant in stages so we harvest all summer long. Do the farmers market thing.I laugh at the people who say all our food is organic, all gardens since the beginning of time have been this way, plant and grow.if you keep the garden weed free Bugs i never see.

Check ordinances and make sure you don't need a permit or anything. Especially if you are in city limits. After that you need to decide what kind of garden you want, which depends on how much space you have. If you have the money to invest you can build garden boxes, which is just four pieces of wood you put together and make sure good durable wood that will last a while, don't get treated wood. Or you can make the boxes out of bricks or ceder blocks and then fill them with dirt. Or another option is if your ground isn't too rocky can try tilling it and adding a bunch of new garden soil and other mineral and such , which involves getting ground tested. Or if you lack space then stick to potted plants, even some veggies make decent potted plants, you can even get dwarf fruit trees to keep in pots on a patio. Make sure you get plants native to your area. If you have to room, and time box planters is quicker, a real ground garden takes a few years to establish. Though a real garden even one that is 10x10 isn't that cheap once you get boxes in you have to fill them with either bags of potting soil or get a load of top soil from a dirt or landscape business .Good luck.
