What is the correct terminology for the upper slot on a door?

You probably know the thing in talking about. You know, that little hatch at the upper part of an actual door in place of a peephole. That one that lets you open it and see the person or view on the other side. It s usually in shows or movies featuring a clubhouse or guarded facility. Please help! I need to know for a story I m writing!

@JohnP, I assume that he's talking about the little 6-inch square with a sliding door, through which (in old movies) a stranger would tell the owner of a speakeasy, "Joe sent me," or some such code word to gain admission.

It's called a peephole--specifically, a sliding peephole.

Do you mean the little round spy-glass which you see in some front doors? The idea of a "slot" is strange to me in Britain -- nowhere have I ever seen a door with an "upper slot". There is usually no "hatch" covering the spyhole.

Where in the world do you live that has such "slots"?

Spyhole.
