I obviously don't know you from a hole in the wall, but consider the following;

1. You have the rest of your life to work.

Once you hit adulthood, you will be expected to work. So therefore, if you can enjoy what being 17 years old has to offer, don't be in so much of a rush to get a job. You only get to be 17 once.

2. Studying will earn you more money in the long run.

So if you are earning minimum wage for a 20 hr/week job, you can make about $1,600 per summer, minus taxes. That extra spending money is great, but if you put that much effort into your studies, you can get a scholarship that might be worth ten times more than that.

So if you are just sitting around the house and doing nothing, then by all means look into getting a job. But you would be better off hitting the books, maybe playing a sport or doing volunteer work to pad the college application. You will be better off in the end.

There's no "normal"; people start their working lives at different ages for different reasons. You have a really good attitude - seeing your friends work and wondering if you should be too - and that responsible, willing attitude will get you much further in life than any part time job in a 7-11 could right now. So hang on to your great attitude and study hard and you'll do great.

I think you can get a part-time job, not a full time job.

Yeah that's normal, your still so young, Your only 17. I had my first job when I was 16 but I only had it for 3 months. I didn't work when I was 17 and I got a job about 6 months after my 18th birthday. Your fine dude.

Yes, it's okay. Maybe you can get a job this summer.

There is nothing to be ashamed of. If you really WANT to work, sit down with your parents and talk to them about how you feel. Explain why it's important to you. Compromise and find something only a couple of hours a day or only on the weekends. As a mom, I'm telling you that your parents want what's best for you. I said the same to my daughters in high school. I wanted them to focus on their studies so they could get into a good college. I want them to pursue their goals and dreams, which requires a degree. And I don't want them to be so stressed and tired and worried about work that they can't focus on their studies. I work hard so they don't have to. They graduated last year. They got into excellent colleges. They are working part time now, but looking back, tell me they are really thankful they didn't have to in highschool. You have your entire life to work. If your parents are willing to support you, take advantage of it while you can!

Nothing to be ashamed of if you aren't neglecting your studies.

Get you license as soon as possible. While you are doing that, save up to buy a car if your parents aren't going to do that for you....

You're not a loser for not having a job. I didn't have one for a while.

Very normal. I'm 18 and going to college soon and still have yet to have a real job. Don't worry, you're still young enjoy your time while you can. And if you go to college you can work somewhere on your campus too.
