Data has been collected to show that at a given wavelength in a 1.00 cm pathlength cell, Beer's Law for the absorbance of Co2+ is linear. If a 0.135 M solution of Co2+ has an absorbance of 0.350, what is the concentration of a solution with an absorbance of 0.420? Include units in your answer.

Let c M be the concentration of a solution with an absorbance of 0.420.

0.135 M : c M = 0.350 : 0.420
0.350c = 0.135 × 0.420
c = 0.15 × 0.420 / 0.350
c = 0.18

The concentration of a solution with an absorbance of 0.420 = 0.18 M

Beer's law

A = k.c

where A is absorbance, k is a constant and c is the concentration

from the known concentration find k

0.350 = k.0.135 so k = 2.593

now use k to find the second concentration

0.420 = 2.593.c so c = 0.162 M
