Why did the chemical reaction stop?

When I'm preparing a salt
for e.g. I add excess magnesium to hydrochloric acid
and the questions asks why the reaction stopped
Do I say because all the magnesium has reacted or because all the acid has reacted?

As it has been stated that magnesium is in excess, then hydrochloric acid is the limiting reactant.

Hence, the reaction stops when all the acid has reacted.

Could be either --- so in general you say that all of ONE of the reactants has been used in the reaction. ... Unless you have some amounts and then they want you to do a calculation to show which has been used up to stope the reaction.
