Currently, the U.K. Government issues 6 different kinds of British Passports (except emergency passports) based on the nationalities involved:

- British Citizen
- British Overseas Territories citizen
- British Overseas citizen
- British subject
- British National (Overseas)
- British protected person

These 6 different passports look similar. But if you look at the identification page, the nationality section and the machine-readable code will indicate the exact status involved.

In your case, either the following happens:

1. You misidentified your passport as a BN(O) Passport, which in fact, your passport should be a British Citizen Passport; or,

2. Your passport is a BN(O) Passport. Either the observation will contain the following:

a. The Holder has the right of abode in the United Kingdom; or,
b. The Holder is a British Citizen;

or one of your passport page contains a certificate of entitlement.
