1. Nitrogen monoxide and oxygen react to produce nitrogen dioxide according to the following equation:

O2(g) + 2NO(g) → 2NO2(g)

Use the data in the following table to type a rate law for this reaction.

2. Hydrogen reacts with ethyne, C2H2, to produce ethane, C2H6, as shown below:

2H2(g) + C2H2(g) → C2H6(g)

Use the data in the following table to type a rate law for this reaction.

O₂(g) + 2NO(g) → 2NO₂(aq)
Let Rate = k [O₂]ᵃ [NO]ᵇ

Substitute the data into the rate equation :
3.30 × 10⁻³ = k (1.20 × 10⁻²)ᵃ (1.40 × 10⁻²)ᵇ ...... [1]
6.60 × 10⁻³ = k (2.40 × 10⁻²)ᵃ (1.40 × 10⁻²)ᵇ ...... [2]
1.32 × 10⁻² = k (1.20 × 10⁻²)ᵃ (2.80 × 10⁻²)ᵇ ...... [3]

[2]/[1] :
2 = 2ᵃ
a = 1

[3]/[1] :
4 = 2ᵇ
b = 2

Hence, Rate = k [O₂] [NO]²
