A gas is placed in a 5.0-mL syringe. It exerts 129 mm Hg of pressure on the inside walls of the syringe. The syringe's plunger is pressed, reducing the volume of the syringe to 3.1 mL. The cap was not removed from the syringe, so none of the gas escapes. Assuming the temperature of the gas does not change, use Boyle's law (below) to determine the pressure of the compressed gas.
P1V1 = P2V2

Before compression : P₁ = 129 mmHg, V₁ = 5.0 mL
After compression : P₂ = ? mmHg, V₂ = 3.1 mL

P₁V₁ = P₂V₂
Then, P₂ = P₁ × (V₁/V₂)

The pressure of the compressed gas, V₂
= (129 mmHg) × (5.0/3.1)
= 208 mmHg

P1V1 = P2V2
129 mm Hg (5.0 mL) = P2 (3.1 mL)
P2 = 208 mm Hg
