1.6 g of a hydrocarbon on complete combustion gave 4.4g of CO₂ and 3.6g of H₂O. Show that this data proves law of conservation of mass ?
Mass fraction of O in CO₂ = (16×2)/(12 + 16×2) = 32/44
Mass fraction of O in H₂O = 16/(1×2 + 16) = 16/18
hydrocarbon + O₂ → CO₂ + H₂O
Mass of O₂ = (Mass of O in CO₂) + (Mass of O in H₂O) = [4.4 × (32/44) + 3.6 × (16/18)] g = 6.4 g
Total mass of reactants = (Mass of hydrocarbon) + (Mass of O₂) = (1.6 + 6.4) g = 8.0 g
Total mass of products = (Mass of CO₂) + (Mass of H₂O) = (4.4 + 3.6) g = 8.0 g
Total mass of reactants = Total mass of products
This proves law of conservation of mass.
