What are the different purposes of meditation?

For years I've read about meditation on and off and never really believed the hype. Now I'm in a position in life where I need to clear my mind and order my thoughts appropriately, but from time to time I've heard different views of meditation. Some people say you need to chant mantras, some people say your legs and arms are supposed to be in different positions, and some people say you should use scents with meditation? When people talk about focusing your mind on one thing whilst meditating, that makes a lot of sense to me but hell what do I know? Please help!

The only things to remember to get you going with meditation is firstly, a quiet space, or gently soothing sounds this helps internal concentration, secondly sit with your back straight, this helps with the easing of opening and closing your lungs, thirdly concentrate on your breathing only, how it softly moves in and out, how the air feels as it fills your lungs, how it feels as you exhale, how your chest rises and falls and how this feels... You can count your breathes to yourself up to 10 if your mind wanders away from your breathing then return to one and start counting again.

It can be difficult for some, but once these are mastered most gain a fabulous new sense.

Wishing you much luck, peace and love.

There are different styles and methods of meditation. They use different practices. Some have you sit in specific positions, others don't. Some demand silence. Others encourage music or candles or incense. Some have you try to clear all thoughts, to focus on the present moment. Others guide you through spoken words to picture specific things. So it really depends on what method you find easiest.

There are two kinds of meditation. The first one is where you pause in your reading, think deeply about what you have read and see how you can apply it to your life, to benefit yourself. The bible recommends this kind.

The other, has it's roots in pagan religion and is a form of witchcraft. It is strictly forbidden by God.

For example this:

"Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are of serious concern, whatever things are righteous, whatever things are chaste, whatever things are lovable, whatever things are well-spoken-of, whatever things are virtuous, and whatever things are praiseworthy, continue considering these things" (Philippians 4:8. Bible).
