You back your files up to your external hard drive, yes. But how you do that is up to you. You can buy software to do it, you can do it manually (edit/copy, edit/paste) or you can install a free program.
The best FREE backup program I've ever used is SynToy. It's made by Microsoft. I use it on both of my home computers and I back up my files to an external hard drive using it. In this scenario, you are backup your personal files. But any software on your computer will have to be reinstalled. Here is the link:

Now if you want to "take a picture", so to speak, of your entire hard drive, and then put that "picture" on your new hard drive, you can also do that. For that, you will need some software to clone your hard drive, or "take a picture" of it. Then install that picture on your new hard drive. I use Norton Ghost, but it's not free, however you can use their free trial. That is here:
