In β decay, electrons are emitted. This is because a neutron is changed to a proton and emits an electrons in β decay.
n → p + e

Therefore, the daughter nucleus would have one more proton and one less neutron than the parent nucleus. In other words, the atomic number of the daughter nucleus would be expected to be greater than the isotope undergoing decay, because the daughter nucleus has one more proton than the parent nucleus.
