Zinc oxide is an amphoteric oxide, which can undergo neutralization with both strong acids and strong alkalis to form salts.

Zinc oxide neutralizes sodium hydroxide to form the salt sodium zincate. The equation is :
ZnO(s) + H₂O(l) + 2NaOH → Na₂[Zn(OH)₄](aq)
