Trimethylene oxide is a cyclic molecule, which contains three units of -CH₂- and one -O- atom.

Each -CH₂- unit is named as "methylene", and thus the three units are named as "trimethylene".
Besides, the -O- atom is named as "oxide".
Hence, the whole compound is named as "trimethylene oxide".

The IUPAC name for trimethylene oxide is oxetane.
Other names are 1,3-propylene oxide, 1,3-epoxypropane, and oxacyclobutane.
