what is the dilution factor you dissolve a compound of unknown mass in 5ml of water and then extract 1ml of the solution and dilute the 1ml until 10ml mark. what is the dilution factor?

Note that the 5 mL of water is not diluted. Only 1 mL of the extract is diluted to 10 mL.

The dilution factor is 1/10.

1/5 * 1/10 = 1/50.

The dilution factor is

the reciprocal: 50.

Why 50? Imagine that the

original mass in the 5 mL

was 50 mg. You take 1/5 of

this as you've taken I mL

of the original 5 mL:

50 mg * 1/5 = 10 mg.

1 mL contains 10 mg.

1 mL made up to 10 mL

constitutes a 1/10 dilution.

10 mg * 1/10 = 1 mg.

Dilution factor = 50/1 = 50.
