3/x = 2 is a linear equation? Why?

Actually 3/x = 2 not is a linear equation. After discuss with lecturer and dr., them say in linear equation, unknown x cannot divide by any number, that mean unknown x cannot be denominator.

Cross multiplying 3/x=2 gives 2x=3, which is a linear equation.
