What do call a person citizen in USA?

I remember an argument with my mom about calling person there American is politically wrong. That everyone on the island is American. What are people in USA, U-awians?

It isn't an island. It's a frickin continent semi-attached to another continent. Citizens of the USA can call themselves Americans or they can identify by the state they live in.
I identify as a New Yorker. We're not like most other Americans.

Some years ago the adjective "Usonian" (from the initials of United States Of North America) was suggested, but it never caught on.

Usually you just say "American," and in most contexts that makes sense. If there's any danger of misunderstanding, you can be more precise by saying "a citizen of the USA."
