Do you think window ac units are trashy?

I think they're better than having no air conditioning at all.

I think by their very nature they're going to inefficient and expensive to run. The most efficient (and hence cheapest) units will be two part systems with separate indoor and outdoor units - but even then, the house must be properly insulated against draughts.

I do think they're trashy. I lived in an apartment in the ghetto when I was younger and there were bulky ac window units everywhere.

Yes.

Where I live, a lot of people have window ac units. Not many people have central air conditioning because it doesn't usually get extremely hot here in the summer. But for the really hot days, you'll see even really nice houses with a window air conditioner hanging out of it.

Well...central air conditioning is expensive, a window unit cheaper. And where I live I only need air conditioning 2-3 months in summer, so I take it out of window when not needed..

I can't say whether they are trashy or not. But I have two at home, and what I think they are is economical and efficient.
