Using long division we have:
.........x - 3
.........__________
2x + 1)2x² - 5x - 3
..........2x² + x
...............- 6x - 3
...............- 6x - 3
....................0 remainder
Hence, (2x² - 5x - 3)/(2x + 1) = x - 3
i.e. 2x² - 5x - 3 = (x - 3)(2x + 1)
