It has been part of China since GB handed it back in 1997. However, under an agreement with GB, it retains its own laws and currency and there is a customs border between HK and the rest of China.

Hong Kong is now an integral part of China but with some autonomy.

Hong Kong has all along been taken as an independent state by the international community ever since HK is developed by the British.

HK former Governors visited HK's trading nations on a yearly basis and were given equal status with presidents and prime ministers all around the world!

Chinese Communist Party likes to claim everything as its own private asset. Do HKers want to be under a corrupted, barbaric, inhumane regime which has raised up 1.3 billion slaves that has no brain, no rule, no order, no honesty, no culture, no ethics, no dignity, no respect, no consideration for others, no responsibility, no manner, no vision, no human rights, no freedom, no accountability, no shame? No.

England leased Hong Kong for 99 years. The lease expired China did not renew the lease. So it is part of China now. Unlike the Spanish who leased the Sullue Sultanites, Guantanamo bay in Cuba on forever leases as long as paid every year. These were important coaling stations at one time in the past. Hong Kong was more for trade with England.
