Me and a friend are going exploring creepy abandoned areas, would it be wise to get a sort of filter mask to protect against asbestos etc?

No, if done the way most do it. A dust mask will be good for the dust you encounter but will do nothing for asbestos. For asbestos you must have a professionally fitted mask with asbestos specific filters. If not the correct mask and if not fitted, the mask may actually more harm than good. For such abandoned areas, unless you started ripping and disturbing material, asbestos is the least of your worries. Lead paint, bird droppings, mold, sharp metal, rats and other vermin, rat and other vermin droppings, collapsing floors, and the police are much bigger potential problems compared to asbestos.

As Mr Woods has stated, asbestos may be the least of your worries when entering abandoned or derelict buildings and areas.

With regard to respirators, in the EU, the type of respirator work for protection from asbestos is typically a half mask fitted with a P3 filter or FFP3. These masks and filters are only any good if correctly used and fitted. They offer limited protection and must be formally fitted to ensure it fits the wearer correctly and is used correctly.

There are other problems also. If you were wearing the mask to protect from know or presumed asbestos, the first question would be how would you know if and to what level you were exposed, how will one decontaminate after exposure, what will you do with the contaminated items after use etc.

I would therefore strongly suggest staying out of these buildings/areas on the grounds of yours and others safety. Also consider, what would happen if there were a problem and the EMS were required to attend, could you also be putting them at risk?
