Can I steal my neighbors cat?

Hypothetically speaking, if one were to take in their neighbors cat, without the neighbors knowledge, would one be committing a crime?

Heres the story: I have these awful neighbors. They are always making noise in the middle of the night, getting drunk or high, they always leave their REALLY bright porch light on, and they are just a nuisance to the whole hood. Now these neighbors have a cat that always comes and visits, is very lovable, seems a bit underfed, and is a total sweetheart. Bingo (the name I've given the cat) always seems like he never gets any attention, to the point that he sits at my window and meows for me to come love him up. Bingo is also always outside, I was pretty sure he was a stray until I saw him go into his house for five minutes. Bingo is also loved by everyone in the family, including our cat we think is satan, because he hates everyone besides Bingo. I think I could provide I better home for Bingo, thats why I want to "steal" him.

Also I'm a minor if that clears up whether this would be illegal.

I have been in this situation before. My aunts neighbors were kicking their dog and throwing rocks at it. After calling animal services twice (they wouldn't do anything) I decided to finally take the dog. They had previously ran over their dog and left it because they were late for a party so I knew I did the right thing. I would just keep feeding it and giving it attention. The more it comes around the more it will consider your home its home. You could always ask your neighbors whos cat it is (play stupid) and see if they even care about it or have a name for it.

They also left the dog for over 6 hours tied up to a tree with no water. It was over 80 degrees so I brought him some water and moved him to the shade. This was before I saved him.

I've been in a similar situation (someone had a cat in my apartment complex, poor thing was all bones and needed attention, they didn't care for him at all), and yes, I did steal the cat. I don't think they even knew he was gone, so there's always that chance.

You could take it and play dumb, telling whoever that you thought it was a stray.

it could be a stray cat as far as you know right?

I would've taken the cat already.
Call animal services to see what they do maybe?
But if they are hardcore party-goers as you say, then they probably won't give a crap or even notice the cats gone. Bad things come to those who party too much, always.
Good luck!

Realize if you do this he'll be an indoor cat only forever then, you can't let him outside for the chance they'll see what's going on. But if you're willing to commit to that and give him a good indoor home and you're sure they neglect it then yeah, go for it. Go get a litterbox (2 cats need 2 litterboxes, 2 bowls, etc.), make sure you're ready for him, and the next night he comes over scoop him up and bring him inside.

I had a cat once who was well treated. New neighbors moved in next door with a baby, apparently the cat LOVED the baby. They adopted him as he wanted to sleep with the baby. I didn't know where he disappeared to til one day they were telling me about this cat. What was I to do he loved that baby. The moral of the story just do it not your fault he prefers you.

That would be a crime. Just keep being nice to the cat.

Are you sure they're bad owners? If they are, then I might go ahead and take it but not if you're not sure. Who gives a sht about laws?

Well stealing a cat is considered as a crime but in your case that's not a crime at all because you're doing a good job.Bingo need you.Your neighbors aren't responsible to take care of him.I'm sure Bingo will be happy in your house with you and your family. But do not let anyone know about this either they'll gonna tell your neighbors you stole their cat

So what if you're a minor? The cat would be inside your PARENTS' home so they would be the ones stealing it.

Take it in and they will likely come over and ask if your parents have seen it and/or see it in your window. And then what? They likely won't involve the police but who knows what they could end up doing to make them even WORSE neighbours.

Why not just have it "disappear" by having a friend that will keep it indoors where cats belong and lives nowhere near you take it? Clearly they care little for it if they let it roam. Note though, that If it's thin it's probably sick not underfed as free roaming cats can hunt birds, mice, etc as well as eat food at their homes as well as any left outside others.

Also pretty foolish to post this with the cat's name. What if one of them frequents this site and reads this?

You might be able to take it and see if they miss it. If they do they might love it more.

We found a cat that was in our porch for months and when it was getting cold. We took it to the vet and they called the number for the microchip and we finally had it out in our name. So you could take it and see if it's microchipped. Have your parents do this obviously

Cats live where they want to. They choose where they want to go. If they aren't getting the food, love, attention and care they need they'll go someplace else. That someplace else is you.
2016-05-22 4:56 pm
Oh my god.. Well, you should definitely ask whoever you're living with if it will be okay to take in another cat. I appreciate your concern for the other cat though. I'd probably want to do the same thing. However, it doesn't seem like the neighbors are doing anything wrong. If the cat looks underfed, you should just give it some food when you see it. As long as they're not hurting the cat, I think it's okay.. Maybe she (of he) just doesn't like food that much? One of my cats is really skinny. She definitely doesn't eat as much as my other cats. That cat might have the same issue. I really don't think you should steal the cat though. The neighbors might actually love the cat. I don't think being drunk or high, or their outside light, has anything to do with how they feel about their pet. You should talk to them about the cat instead. Are you a P!ATD fan? "It's much better to face these kinds of things with a sense of poise & rationality." Just remember that quote.

Report it... to the police or something tell them that they arnt taking care of there cat and then it should be taken away from them and you could adopt it or take it for free from the cop dont steal though dats bad just report it and report that they are being really loud at night and if they get enough reports they should get a fine or something just over all report the cat and them hope I helped bro 😄

NO. I'm trying to find my orange kitten that went missing 4 days ago, and although we might sit on our porch and hang out we are IN NO WAY bad fur parents. I'm sorry but this sounds suspiciously like what happened to my cat. I've had him since he was a kitten and he spends have his time indoors/outdoors. The animal LOVES me and I'm going crazy wondering where he is. We also sometimes forgot to turn off our porch light but it comes on because the cat comes in at night and likes to leave early in the morning. He's just a friendly cat!!
If you suspect abuse you call the humane shelter. Honestly, the fact that you accuse your neighbors of being meth heads without evidence is appalling.
I just want my baby to come home and I'm appalled that because I sit on my porch at night and my cat likes to roam people might think I'm unsuited to be his owner. I've never had an animal that loves me as much as he does.
If you've taken the cat, then tor gods sake OP let him go home!
