Definitely not to be compared to CoD or Halo. Overwatch doesn't have a Team Deathmatch mode, or Deathmatch mode for a reason, Blizzard did not want to give the impression that this game was about killing your opponents. They wanted to ensure the game stayed focused around team play and cooperation.
It is a FPS Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA), to be compared more with Team Fortress.
Given the nature of MOBAs it does not have a campaign mode, but that's not to say it doesn't have a story. Blizzard has already begun releasing short animated films to help give context to the unique characters and the world & reason you fight. Many fans are theorizing there will be a full length movie or animated series to be released some time shortly after the games release (but I'm a bit skeptical on that, and instead expect a series of books as with all Blizzard games). The point is Blizzard has never skimped on telling an elaborate well thought out story.
The game has several different game modes to help ease new players into the game.
You start out with the beginners tutorial of course which gives you the basics of character movement.
Afterwards you can enter the training grounds where you can select any Hero and test out skills and abilities in a non-hostile environment.
And following that you can enter matches against A.I. You can choose to team up with human players, or you can select to have A.I. team mate as well.
Vs. A.I has 3 difficulty modes; easy, medium, and hard.
If A.I. have become too predictable or you feel the desire for more challenging play; you can join Quick Match games which you put 6 humans vs 6 humans, Blizzard does have match making to sure like skilled players are put together, and that pre-made teams are matched up against other pre-made teams.
If you really want to try-hard, there is also Ranked matches where players take things a little more seriously.
There are toxic players in all games no matter the genre. Blizzard views chat as a Privilege; and privileges can be taken away. As with all Blizzard games there are means to report toxic players, enough reports and those players will loose their chat privileges preventing them from communicating with other players. Blizzard has even gone so far to ban "Silenced" players from being able to play in Ranked matches.
Blizzard has no tolerance for toxic players ruining the fun for other players.
