The amount you can get out of an ATM per day has nothing to do with your account balance. The main reason is so the machine doesn't run out of money! Especially when the bank is closed and there's nobody there to keep the machine loaded up with cash.

Wouldn't it be annoying if you're having a night out with friends, you need a bit more money, you go to the ATM and it's empty? Well obviously you're going to think about how much money you might need first, but it could happen.

So generally everyone has the same limit, and £200 is about normal.

Another reason is if your card is stolen and somehow they get your PIN as well, they can't empty your account any faster than £200 a day. So the limit protects you.

If you went into the bank, that's totally different. Everything's possible because you're talking to real people. Then you can have the whole balance if they've got it in cash to give you. And £500 certainly won't be a problem to them. (I can give you an example of when I've withdrawn more than that in cash by going in.) Exactly right - going into the bank is how to do it.

A debit card would have a daily limit, for your own protection in case your card is lost or stolen. But you may be able to ask for a higher temporary for a specific purchase, or you could withdraw any amount in person.
