Why were computers invented?

In 1822, Charles Babbage conceptualized and began developing the Difference Engine, considered to be the first automatic computing machine.
During WW II computers were designed by several different nations (Germany, the UK, and the USA) for various purposes.
Colossus was an electronic digital computer, built during WWII from over 1700 valves (tubes). It was used to break the codes of the German Lorenz SZ-40 cipher machine that was used by the German High Command. Colossus is sometimes referred to as the world's first fixed program, digital, electronic, computer.
The US-built ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer) was the first electronic programmable computer built in the US. Although the ENIAC was similar to the Colossus it was much faster and more flexible.
Although ENIAC was designed and primarily used to calculate artillery firing tables for the United States Army's Ballistic Research Laboratory, its first programs included a study of the feasibility of the thermonuclear weapon.

Why Were Computers Invented
Because human beings are basically masochistic.
The Abacus was a primitive computer. Most early computers, right up until the 1980's, were used for math and mechanical tasks like punching out holes in the paper used for utility bills. The Apollo moon landings required an awful lot of calculus; computers made it easier.
To break the Lorenz code, to compute ranges, windage and elevation, for navigation aids.
Computers were invented to make complex mathematical calculations possible
