I am not sure if you even payed attention or aware when speaking with someone on English or watching You-Tube interviews / talk shows about people repeating same words very often. Pay attention next time and you'll notice that it become either stupid trend or they really cannot focus so they repeat following words VERY often; So,you know, like. these 3 , it can get very annoying. or stutter a lot, erm, aaa. it..can...just....lol

Ah, Mike! You've struck a nerve. This drives me crazy too. If you took "like" out of the vocabulary of everyone from the age of 5 to 25 or 30, they wouldn't be able to say anything. Being a guy who prides himself on attempting to speak well, I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Of course, after listening to these conversations I tend to think that these people, not being able to speak, wouldn't be such a bad thing. I've actually counted the number of times that a teenager said like to his girlfriend while standing in a checkout line and he said it 17 times in two minutes. I'm not kidding!, and this doesn't apply to illiterate people; many college students speak this way too. It doesn't sound dull to me; it sounds stupid. There's lots of other examples: "at this point in time",( redundant.....at this point or at this time); "impact" for affect (apparently everyone is walking around with a hammer); "very unique" ( unique means one of a kind; you can't have a very one of a kind); "several alternatives" (an alternative is a choice between two things). What really upsets me is when you hear professionals use these terms, such as radio announcers or TV hosts. I did try to correct a girl using a stationary bike in a gym cycling next to me who was using her cell phone and talking to a friend. I overheard he talk about her elementary school students and, since I was in the same profession, I was concerned about her speaking to her students the same way. When she hung up I thanked her because I said she helped me pass the boring time on the bike by allowing me to count the number of times she said like. When I told her she couldn't believe me. She did say she didn't talk to her students that way. I hope not, but there's no way of knowing. I guess the only thing you can do is speak correctly and set an example. One thought that might assuage your frustration, I really believe if you speak correctly, for example differentiating between may and can, you make a very positive impression upon your listener. Not only does it indicate you're educated, but it often involves a courteous and respectful manner. You'll find that many people will respond in the same way. My fair lady's Henry Higgins was right, the way you speak defines who you are.

People learn by hearing the media every day.
We memorized one candidate saying she did nothing criminal.
I guess by people repeating words they imagine it has more of an effect on us psychologically. In a way it does,it's close to brainwashing.
