Is XBOXLive Silver Membership free?
I am primarily a PlayStation guy. I play most of my video games on my PS4 or PS3. But I caved into saving up for a used XBOX One on eBay for Sunset Overdrive,Halo 5, and Rare Replay. I just managed to win an auction by being the only bidder (damn did I get lucky) and now I've got a bundle of an XBOXOne and those games along with GOW collection on its way. I wanted to know in advance if a silver XBOX Live account is free. I know you have to pay for Gold but I'm not interested in online multiplayer. I just want access to the marketplace and messaging.

Silver is free, but you can't do a lot of things, like play GTA Online. You need Xbox gold to do that. I think it's $60 a year. But you can go to the marketplace and do messaging with just silver.
Xbox Live Silver is free. You can use this to do anything on online, EXCEPT, play games online.
For that you need Xbox Live Gold, which is $60/year. Xbox Live Gold also carries some additional perks, most notably, the 2 free games each month (announced on the 1st and 15th, and available for 30 days.)
On the menu you'll see a pane for "Games With Gold" which describes the program and lets you download the available games.
You can also go on Xbox.com and "buy" your free games that way as well. They will download and install when your Xbox goes online.
Silver (now just known as free) is free.
Gold costs money.
You will need Gold for anything multiplayer. Silver, or Free, means you can connect to everything, and have access to apps, but games will be single player or local only.
XBOX Live ALWAYS costs money.
