According to the Dictionary, the middle distance which is described as that part of the landscape,scene, painting, etc.,between the foreground and the background.

The middle ground in a painting is a reference to the spatial area in a painting between foreground and background.

Well the foreground is everything in front. The background is the space off in the distance, and the midground is the space in between. If you decide your paper by quarters, usually you would take the two halves at the top to be the sky and background, draw the vanishing point in the middle of the page on the line that marks half and the lowest quarter would be your foreground, leaving the second lowest to be the midground.
