Zn + Cu(NO3)2 -> Cu+Zn(NO3)2
Identify the spectator ions in the following reaction?
I don't know what this means. The charge?
I'm so lost. My professor never taught us anything like this.

Spectator ions are the ions which do not take place in reaction.
The full equation of the reaction :
Zn(s) + Cu(NO₃)₂(aq) → Cu(s) + Zn(NO₃)₂(aq)
Write the equation in ionic form :
Zn(s) + Cu²⁺(aq) + 2NO₃⁻(aq) → Cu(s) + Zn²⁺(aq) + 2NO₃⁻(aq) ...... (*)
The ionic equation becomes :
Zn(s) + Cu²⁺(aq) → Cu(s) + Zn²⁺(aq)
From equation (*), NO₃⁻ ions do not take place in reaction.
Hence, NO₃⁻ ions are the spectator ions.
