Is working in retail really that bad?
I had a job for 6 months in a local grocery store chain and it was pretty decent. I didn't enjoy it, per say, because I only had one or two days off a week and they were never back to back. The store was always crowded with non native English speakers, rude people, impatient people, etc. All of my managers were my age or slightly older and nice. I worked anywhere from 5 to 5 1/2 hours, 7 hours near the holiday. I am now looking for another summer job. Do you recommend retail? Will my shifts be super long, like 8-9 hours? I have a lot planned this summer (I'm a college student), so I want to find the right job that will work around that and be flexible with hours.

retail is nice for that as they often have enough workers where you can make your schedule flexible.
if you want a change of pace, try looking at local temp agencies near you. you can tell them the hours you're looking for, and will contact you when they have work. it can range from warehouse work to office work and more. it might be easier getting a job there, as the temp agency will screen you for positions, and companies that work with the temp agency will take you on easier temporarily as you've already been screened for work.
you can apply to multiple temp agencies near you, just look around on google in your area.
or, if you want to work within your field of study, talk with your college counselors to see if they have internship programs available. they may not be paid, but it will get you experience to help you hopefully find a job when you graduate.
good luck.
