What s the best drugstore hair dye to fix a patchy dye job?

I just recently dyed my hair a medium brown. It was a darker shade than what my current hair color was but for some reason is made my roots a lighter shade than the rest of my hair. What would be the best hair dye to use to even out my hair color into one even shade?
