The Perks of Being a Wallflower - did charlie attempt suicide?

In the book: not mentioned;
in the film, he had a mental breakdown so yes to the collapse. it didn't explictly state that is an attempted suicide, but i think it's implying he tried to kill himself. Even though the short flashback of him seeing a cutting scar on aunt helen's wrist, he took the knife and tried to stab it to his wrist. doesn't seem like just self harm
