Why should I have a charity?

I am a very successful guy. I am making about 1.6 million dollars a year before taxes. Which means, I pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in taxes. I just can't seem to understand why when I pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in taxes, do I have to turn around and "give back"?

First and foremost, I made it on my own. I started in my bedroom when I was 16. I am now 21 with a lot going on for myself. Why do I have to give any of my money away? I worked hard for it. Also, please don't come on here with that "The bible says so." I am an atheist. I don't believe in that type of stuff.

Anyways, what do you guys think? Are there any other rich people out there who also feel how I do? It's just ridiculous how so many people think that they are so entitled to the hard working's money.

Hard work is not enough. You also need luck. Some day you may be unlucky and need help of others.

You don't have to give to charity. No one cares if you don't.

Now, you might have a talk with your accountant. You might find that giving money to charity reduces your taxes, and that when you give to a charity, you get to choose where your money goes, rather than shipping it off to the government where you don't get a choice.

You may also find that you like it when charities suck up to you. Most will be very, very nice to you for $25,000 or so, or even the hint of $25,000. They'll consult you, they'll ask your opinion, they'll put you on the board of directors if you want. You might like that.

So, if you're making $1.6 before taxes, and if you've already spread out your earnings over the last five years to minimize your taxes, chances are that you don't have many ways to shelter your money. You may be sending $600,000 or so to the government. (More if you're not in the U.S.). So, your choice might be to write a check to the Feds, or have 24 charities sucking up to you. Your choice. You can try it and see if you like it.

Alternatively, you could sock away $600,000 into a foundation that you open, with your name on it. Then you could give away about $30,000 a year, or you could save it up for a few years and put your name on a building at a college. Then people would be speaking your name for years to come.

Or you could just sit in your bedroom and be angry and lonely. Your choice.

The objective of progressive income taxation was to remove the burden from those who had little ability to pay to those who had it. The increasing concentration of wealth among the richest people in the country is becoming a great social problem. Your attitude of let them eat cake has caused revolutions in the past and will cause them in the future if there isn't a more equitable distribution of wealth.

Do you have a cause, besides money, yourself, or your immediate family that you care about? If you do, and you have the money to try to make a change, that is why you have a charity.

If the answer is no, you do not need a charity. It could reduce your taxable income by as much as 50% in a year but you do not need one.

Nobody makes it on their own, unless you are a mountain man survivalist. We share the benefits of each other's efforts in a society of people. If that be the Internet you did not create, the roads and infrastructure you did not build, the labor of workers you paid. Nobody makes it on their own.

You had a bedroom at sixteen to start out of, a luxury not everyone has. You don't need a charity if you do not want one.
