How has English become the unofficial global language?

England, or Britain, used to control half the countries there are and was a trading and financial centre for much of the world. The language went with the English people who lived and worked in those countries. Now the US is one of the major powers and people want to be able to communicate with it.
Mostly because of trade. And, the British Empire did cover rather a lot of the world! 1/4 of the world, and 1/3 of it's people.
