= (x + 2)(x + 7)

= 2x(x - 4)

2x² - 8
= 2(x² - 4) ...... take out the common factor, 2
= 2(x² - 2²)
= 2(x + 2)(x - 2) ...... u² - v² = (u + v)(u - v)


2)
x² + 9x + 14
= x² + 2x + 7x + 14 ...... 2 + 7 = 9 and 2 × 7 = 14
= (x² + 2x) + (7x + 14)
= x(x + 2) + 7(x + 2) ...... take out the common factors, x and 7
= (x + 7)(x + 2) ...... group

2x² - 8x
= 2x(x - 4) ...... take out the common factor, 2x
