Can I only buys indoor unit for my split ac, is it safe?

My outdoor unit of split ac is totally fine, git it checked, indoor unit is damaged beyond repair, so the technicians told me to replace indoor unit only, but someone told me that it may lead to fire, explosion etc. Dur to incompatibility of different models because they use a specific compressor
