What does this simile mean? Solitude...is like Spanish moss which finally suffocates the tree it hangs on?

Solitude is a relief from the jostling of other people. But we can't survive indefinitely alone. We need other people contact, jostling and all. It's a lousy choice.
This simile is trying to express how loneliness or solitude can eventually make someone feel dead inside from feelings of loneliness or depression.
