How do I befriend the shy boy on my bus?

I'm a shy person, but usually if someone decides to strike up a conversation with me I turn into a little social butterfly. The problem I have is just being the one to approach people in general. Recently I've noticed that this boy on my bus shows the same qualities as me (the shy part) and I've been wanting to introduce myself as I know how hard it can be to make friends when you're shy. Besides, I want to try to overcome my shyness and make friends from time to time, but I just don't know how.
