How Can An American Student Move to France With a Minor?

I am waiting to be accepted to a French University but I want to start or at least know the process that I have to take before the time. I know the school will handle my visa process through Campus France, but my main concern is my son. What do I need for him. He is only 4 years old and I want to enroll him in preschool there also. We are staying with family so lodging will not be a problem. How can I insure his visa and a placement in école maternelle (nursery school). What will he need in France to become adjusted.

As you mentioned, Campus France will provide you with the long stay visa (visa de long séjour etudes). A dependent is allowed, provided you have (1) living space, (2) finances, and (3) the permission of the "other parent" to take the child out of the country. You'll inform Campus France of this.

As a student, you can work up to 964 hours per year. Once you have a Master's degree, you can get a one-time resident/work permit (autorisation provisoire de séjour), valid for 1 year. It cannot be renewed.

Ask your family who you are staying with, they are the people who are best place to know about what you need to do, when and how
