How do I go about finding information on my grandfather who came from Greece?

He changed his name when he became a US citizen. He died when my dad was 10 years old. When my dad was alive, he always discouraged me from looking for information on his dad's family. He hated him for good reason. Now, that my dad is deceased, I feel I have the right to know. How do I?

Both of my dad's parents, his brother, and sister are all deceased. He does have 2 nieces that have nothing to do with us. We do know he came thru Canada to the USA and was nationalized in Chicago. Most of my paternal grandfather's relatives are deceased or can't be found. It is frustrating. This is the part of my heritage I know little about.

How do I go about finding information on my grandfather who came from Greece?
