in early days many christians would follow the path of Jesus in jerusalem when he was arrested and then crucified , over the years catholic churches installed the stations of his journey starting with the trial , originally there were 37 stations [ i may be wrong there.} there are now 14 , it takes about 20-30 minutes to pray , lent is the time when most people go to their local church to partake either individually or with a congregation leading up to Easter

It started with the gentile Christian Church of Jerusalem after the rebuilding of Jerusalem following the razing of 70 AD. They actually walked to the sites of the events in Jerusalem while praying during Holy Week.
