The empirical formula of a diprotic acid is CHO. Using an experimental molecular weight of 86.2, what is the molecular formula of this acid? (Note: There are more than two hydrogen atoms in this covalent molecule). What is the percent difference between the experimental value of the molecular weight and the exact value of the molecular weight?

Let (CHO)n be the molecular formula.

The molecular weight :
(12 + 1 + 16) × n = 86.2
29n = 86.2
n ≈ 3

The molecular formula = C₃H₃O₃
