In ionic bonds, electrons are [transferred], and in covalent bonds, electrons are [shared].
Inonic ; 'lost/gained'
Covalent ; 'Shared'.
Ionic.
An electron is 'lost' (Ionised) by a metal atom . since the atom now has more protons (+) than electrons (-) , the difference is found and the metal atom becomes the metal ion , with a positive(+) charge. The 'lost' electron is then gained by non-metal. Since the non-metal atom now has less protons(+) than electrons (-) , the difference is found and the non-metal atom becomes the non metal ion, with a negative(-) charge.
Since the two ions have opposite charges (+/-) they are attracted to each other ' like the N/S poles of a magnet. This attraction is the ionic bond.
e.g. 2Na(s) = 2Na^+ + 2e^-
Cl2 + 2e^- = 2Cl^-
Adding
2Na(s) + Cl2(g) = 2NaCl(s).
Covalent bonding is the sharing of electrons . One electron from each atom to form the bond. Its analogy is two people linking arms.
