It can be, but the type of work is not for everyone. I'm a CPA and a lawyer, and the accounting work I had to do to get here made me wanna blow my brains out. Same things every year. Same stupid questions, documenting the same stupid answers, and doing the same journal entries every month and every year. But I worked with a girl who freaking loves the predictability. Some people are that way.

Public accounting is a high-stress environment, but the benefit is that you're able to be a producer. What you do in the office makes your boss money, so you're valuable. I worked about 70 hours a week during peak busy periods. And no, you don't get paid overtime for that. Whether you even get a bonus depends on your employer. Suffice to say nearly every public accountant I know drinks like a fish.

Industry (corporate) accounting, however, you are often viewed as an expense, just a bunch of "bean counters" that the lawyers tell you to keep around. So often when layoffs come around, accounting will be among the hardest hit. Upside is you only work 40-50 hours a week. Downside is, it's rare to have a corporate C-Suite who appreciates you and what you do for the company.

Yes accounting is a great career for those who are suited for it. Not everyone is. The profession is suitable for students who can earn above average grades. Average students or below average students should not attempt accounting because it is a demanding field and those entering it are competing with the most intelligent population.

Yes. Once fully qualified, accountants can earn £26,000 - £50,000+. According to a 2012 salary survey by Stott and May, the average earning potential of chartered accountants six to nine years after qualifying is £85,000. Careers in banking and capital markets tend to attract the highest salaries.
