If you mean a modern-day psychiatric unit, it's like a nice hospital, with plenty of medical and psychiatric care, where people with mental illnesses can get diagnosed and treated until they're well again.
'Mental asylums' existed about 50 to 100 years ago, when they just locked people away if they had a mental illness.
